The numbers are bleak with no relief in sight. Nationally, 2007 home foreclosure filings were up by 75 percent over 2006.

In Central Texas, it's a 56 percent increase from the previous year.

After buying their three-bedroom home two years ago, Charlotte Birden and her husband, Douglas, now face foreclosure after falling behind in their payments.

"To lose it, we lose all those extra things we put into the home as well and it’s very stressful to not know how you're going to keep your home," Charlotte Birden said.

The Birdens know they are not alone.

"We're hearing a lot of foreclosures just this past year over 50 percent of people that you know, invested into homes to make it their own wind up losing them," Douglas Birden said.

But now, a local non-profit group, Frameworks Community Development Corporation is stepping in to help.

"We have a foreclosure prevention section to our program where we provide counseling and education and advocacy and representation for borrowers that are currently facing foreclosure," said Joyce McDonald, Farmeworks CDC.

Reviewing their paperwork, McDonald says the Birden's situation is typical. Their adjustable rate mortgage is beginning to adjust at a higher rate. McDonald is working to find a lender willing to offer the Birden's a lower fixed rate over a longer period of time.

"Some banks are working with us, but it's a fight. It's not an automatic. We're finding a lot of resistance," she said.

With the help of Frameworks CDC, the Birden's are hoping to find a lender willing to work with them and allow them to hold on to their home.

"It's better for our economy. The state collects taxes so there's revenue to keep our schools and roads, so it’s better for the family because it improves the quality of life," said McDonald.

Frameworks CDC recently held a free foreclosure prevention seminar and another is planned soon.
